The 2010 season has come to a close at the Missouri State Fair Speedway. At the end of the night, two more elated drivers added their name to the sacred list of winners at the ‘Historic Half Mile’ by besting the field in their respective divisions and earning the crown of Missouri State Fair Champion! The pumped up fans in the Pepsi Grandstands witnessed the Winged Outlaw Warrior 360 Sprint Cars compete in three heat races and a 20-lap main event along with the Lucas Oil MLRA Super Late Models taking to the track for three heats, one b-main and the 25-lap main event. It was a hot and clear late August evening when things got underway at 6 p.m. as the state fair wound down for another year.

Race night action was brought to the fans and drivers by AAA Insurance during both fair races this year and their support and presence at both events this was a refreshing sight as the #77 AAA Sprint Cup car was on display for the fans just outside the grandstand area. During the intermission break, Cowboy Kenny Bertram, Jason Russell, and a group of aerial flyers on motocross bikes thrilled the crowd with jumps, back flips, and daredevil action with the crowd roaring their approval for the riders’ extreme riding.

For the three WoW heat races, Rusty Potter of Boonville, Austin Alumbaugh of Higginsville, and Randy Martin of California claimed the wins in the eight-car, eight-lap races to set the stage for the twenty-lap main event. Alumbaugh earned the coveted pole position for the 360s with Martin claiming the outside row. Cody Baker and Brian Brown started the race in row two with Sedalia driver Jonathan Cornell and Potter making up the third row. Alumbaugh quickly showed his muscle and set the bar high for the rest of the competition as he blazed around the half mile track with Martin falling in behind the leader for second just in front of Brown in third. Drivers searched for their preferred grooves all around the track both high and low as the first five laps quickly went by, until a yellow flag on lap six waved over the field for the stalled car of Taylor Walton on the front stretch. At the same time, third-running Brown clipped the front of his car while running way down on the low side out of turn two and causing major damage to his machine. Brown tried to make his way back to the Midland Sports Cards pit area on his own but ultimately had to be towed into the infield to make repairs. WoW officials quickly put Brown on the clock, in which he had two minutes to make repairs before the field went back to racing. Brown’s crew were quick on the punch and managed to get Brown back out with 45 seconds to spare.

As the race resumed, Alumbaugh again stepped out to a quarter straightaway lead over second-running Martin and Cornell, who had moved to third from his fifth starting position. Running inside the top three was a difficult task for another driver as Martin, like his rival Brian Brown, found himself in trouble on the back chute with a stalled car by lap ten with the caution again waving over the field. Although Martin’s crew was able to get a reprieve after the caution flew, only to be followed immediately by another quick caution period, he did make it back out onto the track but quickly pulled back in, unable to continue the race. The series’ all-time winning driver was scored in twenty-second place at race end.

At the halfway point, Alumbaugh now had Cornell to deal with in order to claim the win. As the field again settled into a nice race rhythm, Brown quickly gained positions after restarting at the tail after his spin and was in the top ten again by lap fourteen. Lap-after-lap Alumbaugh mastered his way through the lapped traffic to keep Sedalia’s Cornell behind him. Three-fourths of the way through the race, sixteen year old Cody Baker was in the mix having a great run in the third position with R.J. Johnson of Tampa, Florida securely running in fourth and WoW point leader Eric Todd fifth. On lap eighteen, Cornell had one last chance to try and maneuver his way through traffic but it was not to be as the ‘Man of Steel’ from Higginsville, Austin Alumbaugh, was just too strong. It was Austin’s second WoW win of the year and first since way back on May 29th at 24 Raceway in Moberly, MO. Cornell had a great run to second place from fifth, Baker’s youth and exuberance brought him home to a solid third-place run with Johnson holding strong in fourth, Todd fifth and Kansas City’s Jon Corbin advancing from his eleventh starting position to take sixth. Visit the official Winged Outlaw Warriors official website at www.wowsprints.homestead.com.

For the Lucas Oil MLRA, the three heat winners were David Turner of Adrian and a pair of Omaha, Nebraska drivers, John Anderson Joe Kosiski. The b-main win went to Brandon McCormick of Lebanon. Twenty-two drivers started the twenty-five lap feature event for the MLRA with Kelly Boen claiming the pole position with Turner to his outside. A lap one, turn one four car incident involving Dave Eckrich, Kevin Gundaker, Chris Smyser and Jason O’Brien forced the field to realign for another attempt at starting the race, but it was not to be as one more yellow flew on the start before the third time was the charm to get the race underway. It was evident early on that someone would have to record the run of their lives to beat Boen, who quickly left the rest of the field behind him battling for second position.

Turner and Kosiski ran close for second and third position until Kosiski left the speedway on lap five. The field of drivers kicked into a nice race rhythm until the caution again waved at the start of lap nine for Smyser. With the field realigned, it was still Boen in control and new second-place man John Anderson in second with Turner third and former point leader Brad Looney in fourth. The remainder of the race ran caution free with some hard-fought battles for third through seventh position involving Turner, Looney, six-time champion Al Purkey, Randy McGraw of Marshall, and Bill Koons.

At the lap fifteen point of the 25-lap race Anderson tried to find a way to catch Boen but he could not reel the leader in as Boen’s quick pace allowed him to begin lapping cars on lap eighteen. Fifteenth-starting Brandon McCormick made his way into the top ten by midway and went on to finish in ninth in the event. Boen continued to build his lead and ultimately ran away with the win with Anderson settling for second. David Turner, a former winner this year at the speedway came away with a great run to third, followed by Looney, Purkey, McGraw, Koons, and a rebounding Joe Kosiski in eighth position. In victory lane, Boen thanked promoters Reid Millard and Jason Bodenhamer for the dedication in trying to return racing to the half mile this season. Purkey was able to increase his point lead after the event as he sets his sights on a seventh MLRA title. Additional may be found on MLRA’s official website at www.mlraracing.com.

It was a long night at the Missouri State Fair Speedway thanks to a couple red-flag incidents on the speedway and Mother Nature, as she tried to spoil the Tuesday night action at the Historic Half Mile during the 2010 Missouri State Fair sponsored by Triple A Services. Two rain delays lengthened the evening but the speedway staff, along with the help of several drivers was able to bring the track back to life each time due to their dedicated efforts so the hearty crowd in the Pepsi grandstands could witness a full night of racing action.

For the Mid America Modified Series (MAMS), twenty-eight cars were on hand with some of the stiffest competition seen all year playing out in the three heat races to set the stage for the 20-lap main event. NASCAR star and TV personality Kenny Wallace was on hand in his modified to run in the topless race night and he went away with the victory in heat race number one over Jim Moody who advanced seven spots to take second with Steve Payne Nick Bidinger and Steve Potter close behind. Dustin Boney grabbed heat two over Austin Siebert, Terry Schultz, Jason Thompson, and Justin Boney. The final heat win was claimed by Aaron Poe ahead of Brian Bolin, Dean Wille, Matt Dotson, and Mickey Burrell.

For the twenty-lap feature event Moody and D. Boney led the field to the green with Boney quickly grabbing the lead as he’s done so many times this year at several different speedways. The lead duo was quickly joined at the front by Wallace who made his way to second early on in the event relegating Moody to third. Through lap eight the race was extremely competitive until Dean Wille had a scary moment in corner two as his car flipped and ended up on its roof bringing out the red flag. Shad Badder was also involved in the incident, in which both drivers walked away unhurt from their badly damaged cars. Once the field took the green the man on the move was sixteenth starting Chad Lyle who rocketed his way into the top four with Jason Thompson also advancing several positions towards the front in the first eight laps. Wallace maintained second position with Siebert third through the mid stage of the race. Around the halfway point of the race Lyle took second away from Wallace and set his sights on Boney out front. Moody suffered mechanical issues and was unable to finish the event after running in the top three. When it all was said and done, Dustin Boney was able to hold off the hard-charging car of Chad Lyle’s for the win, Lyle crossed the line second with Thompson advancing to third, Wallace fourth, Siebert fifth, and Johnny Fennewald making his way all the way to sixth at race end.

The ULMA late model championship standings heading into the night’s topless special event saw Jason Bodenhamer, Bob Test, Jon Binning, and Vance Wilson all looking to improve one of their season’s fifteen starts. In early heat race action the eighteen cars on hand tried to make their way to the front of the feature lineup. Wilson claimed the opening heat over Bodenhamer, who advanced six spots to second. Walt Imhoff, Dustin Vance, and Brett Wood completed the top five. For the second heat, young driver Gordy Gundaker, son of legendary Missouri racer Kevin Gundaker, came away with the victory over Test, Kevin Coyne, Shawn Rayfield, and Dustin Walker.

After the near flawless late model heat races the drivers were hoping for the same for their main event with Bodenhamer and Vance starting from the front after earning the most passing points in their respective heats. From the start, Wilson quickly grabbed the lead but Bodenhamer stuck right with him until a lap three caution slowed the field. Once racing resumed, Bodenhamer used the high side in turn two to power his way to the front leaving Wilson in second by lap five. The race ran smoothly for several more laps as Bodenhamer and Wilson waged the battle for the win until a lap fourteen caution again slowed the field. Unfortunately right at the same time, Bodenhamer’s car, which had been smoking for several laps, was forced to leave the speedway with motor problems ending his night. At the same time, Test also experienced motor woes and also exited the race after running third the entire race. With the top two in ULMA points out of the event, Steve Clancy, Kevin Coyne, and Gundaker found themselves right in the thick of things for the win. The green flag waved again but another caution flew for Brett Wood and Bob King in turn four and again for Walt Imhoff before the race made it to lap seventeen. The final event of the night had a rough ending with late-race cautions flying over the field. It didn’t matter for Wilson though as he took home the win and the $1,000 payday. Clancy and Gundaker took their battle for second right down to the wire with Clancy narrowly claiming the spot in a photo finish for second with Gundaker third. Coyne had a strong run to fourth with Jon Binning fifth and Trace Westling rounding out the top six.

Advanced race night tickets are now on sale by calling 800.796.6776 or by visiting www.ticketmaster.com for the two race events during the 2010 Missouri State Fair, which take place on Tuesday, August 17 and Sunday, August 22. Same night race tickets may also be purchased at the Pepsi Grandstand ticket booth on the night of the races. The Tuesday, August 17 race night includes the first-ever appearance of the Lucas Oil Sprint Bandits along with Mid America Modified Series (MAMS) and ULMA Late Models. In keeping with the wingless-themed night of the bandits, the MAMS and ULMA competitors will run without their roofs in topless competition. NASCAR Nationwide Series Driver and SPEED Channel personality Kenny Wallace is scheduled to compete in his modified along with the rest of the MAMS competitors. Earlier in the season, Ken Schrader took the victory in the first MAMS modified race at the ‘Historic Half Mile.’ Also on Tuesday, “Professional Freestyle Motocross Rider” Cowboy Kenny Bertram and Xtreme rider Terry Russell of Jefferson City, MO will thrill the crowd with high-flying action on their motorcycles! Bertram is the winningest freestyle motocross rider in history. For more information on Bertram be sure to check out his website at www.cowboykenny.com.

The Lucas Oil Sprint Bandits will mark the return of 410-ci sprint cars to the speedway for the first time since September 5, 1993, when Jack Hewitt drove to victory. According to www.sprintbandits.com, the Current top five in TNT driver points lists Robert Ballou of Rocklin, CA as the leader followed by Travis Rilat of Forney, TX, Brady Bacon of Broken Arrow, OK, Casey Shuman of Tempe, AZ, and J.C. Bland of Springfield, IL. Other standout drivers include Anthony Nicholson, Matt Sherrell, gary Taylor, and Ray Allen Kulhanek. Past sprint bandit champions include Levi Jones, the late Jesse Hockett, Robert Ballou, Tim Kaeding, Dave Darland, and Brady Bacon. Ballou is the all-time winningest driver with nine victories; Bacon has six wins to his credit.

The last MAMS modified visit was back in mid April when legendary driver Ken Schrader took the win. Others in attendance that evening included Johnny Fennewald, Jesse Stovall, and Chad Lyle. The exciting thing about modified racing in the area is the fact that you never know who will show up to compete. This year during weekly W-K Chevrolet Modified action such drivers as Jim Moody, Jason Thompson, Howard Hall, Rick Kimberling, Johnny Scott, David Barker, Curt Potter, Jason Bodehamer, and Rick Beebe have all ran strong. Kenny Wallace will compete with the rest of the modified drivers in his car as the drivers take off their roofs for a topless event. According to the official MAMS website at www.midamericamodifieds.com, drivers currently listed in the top ten standings include Brian Bolin, John Allen, Mark Dotson, Lucas Conley, Johnny Bone, Jr., Austin Siebert, Mickey Burrell, Dustin Boney, Steve Holzkamper, and Terry Schultz. The MAMS modified winner will take home $1,200 for the victory!

For the ULMA late models, all eyes will be on the battle for this year’s championship between former leader Bob Test of Jefferson City, Vance Wilson of Hartford, and current leader Jason Bodehmamer of Centerview. Just a few weeks remain in the hunt for the 2010 season and these three drivers are running neck and neck for the championship. According to www.ulmaracing.com, other drivers near the top tier of the standings include Jon Binning, who recently ran third in an open late model event at the speedway with his steel block ULMA car, Brett Wood, Trace Westling, Tommy Cordray, Chris Cox, Steve Clancy, James Stafford, Jeff Schlup, Zeke Langley, Kevin Coyne, Robbie Wright, John and Brian Pipes, Joe Walkenhorst, Ben Solberg, Jeremy Kelley, Bryan Montgomery, Danny Monroe, and Walt Imhoff. ULMA drivers will compete for the highest-ever purse offered to the association and will also compete without their roofs in topless race action. ULMA drivers will race for a $1,000 pay day! Admission for Tuesday, August 17: Pit Passes $35, General Adm $27, Senior Citizens 65+ $25, Military w/I.D. $25, Kids 6-12 $12, children 5 and under are free! Battle of the Badges Resounding Success as Vaughn, Moody, and Weaver Claim Victories
Alan Vaughn, Jim Moody, and Steve Weaver Victorious at Missouri State Fair Speedway

Sedalia, MO
August 7, 2010

It was a near perfect night for dirt track action at the ‘Historic Half Mile’ that is Missouri State Fair Speedway in Sedalia, Missouri on Friday night during the ‘Battle of the Badges’ race night. Engines roared back to life once more in what turned out to be a tune-up session for many drivers as they prepared for the upcoming races during the 2010 Missouri State Fair. Alan Vaughn of Belton recorded a solid return to victory lane in one of his strongest runs in recent memory to claim the $2,000 winner’s prize in the Subway Late Models. In the W-K Chevrolet Modified ranks, former Missouri State Fair Champion Jim Moody of Odessa sent a strong signal to his fellow competitors that he is the man to beat during the fair races by coming away with a convincing $1,000 victory. Steve Weaver, who had absolutely no race experience prior to hitting the track for competition, came away with the win for the first-ever Battle of the Badges law enforcement race. Sgt. Weaver held back a strong field of fellow law enforcement officers in an exciting race to the finish as competitors raised money for Missouri Special Olympics. Sgt. Weaver alone collected over $10,000 for the cause and all total well over $30,000 was raised for Special Olympics athletes across the state by the 21 participating drivers that took part in this fantastic night of racing.

Fifteen Subway Late Models made their way to the speedway for two qualifying heat races and a twenty-lap feature event. Heat race winners were Matt Johnson of Archie and Vaughn as they set themselves up strong to start at the front of the field for the main event. From the onset of the green flag the two drivers were nose-to-tail throughout the duration of the event as Johnson consistently hounded Vaughn trying to find a way around the leader nearly every lap. Meanwhile, another battle was shaping up just behind the leaders as Jon Binning, in a steel block ULMA car had his hands full in holding back several drivers including David Barker, Bryon Allison, and Randy McGraw. Johnson held strong with the leader as he and Vaughn reached the two laps to go point in the race Johnson pulled up to the inside of Vaughn off of turn two as the two had a drag race into the next turn. Vaughn held the challenge at bay on that lap but shortly after the white flag flew, Johnson again showed Vaughn he was still right there as the two approached a lapped car with one lap to go. Johnson gave it one last try but got too high entering turn three and Vaughn was able to come away with the victory over Johnson, Binning, Barker, Allison, and McGraw.

For the W-K Chevrolet Modifieds, the stellar field of talented drivers took to the track in a final tune-up for the upcoming topless MAMS modified race during the Missouri State Fair on Tuesday, August 17. When names like Jim Moody, David Barker, Rick Beebe, Jason Thompson, Jason Bodenhamer, Curt Rackers, Austin Siebert, Dennis Elliott, Curt Potter, and a returning Chad Lyle show up to race, you know you’re going to witness and action-packed event at the speedway and these men gave the fans in the Pepsi grandstand something to cheer for throughout the evening. Thompson and Moody came away with the victories for the qualifying heat races in a battle to earn the pole position for the 20-lap main event. Chad Lyle, who previously drove to victory lane earlier in the season at the speedway, made his return to racing after heart surgery halfway through the year sidelined him for several weeks. The veteran driver looked as strong as ever as he made his way to third in his heat race to earn a spot in the main event. Moody earned his heat victory after starting sixth and taking his #00 machine to the front, he brought Johnny Scott with him, Scott started in the seventh position to take second at the line. Thompson took his win from the pole by holding back track co-promoter Jason Bodenhamer who came away second. Moody and Scott paced the field for the start of the main event and both drivers immediately pulled away from the rest of the pack. Thompson, Bodenhamer, Elliott, Dotson, Beebe, and Barker all tried to keep pace in their own battle inside the top six. With limited caution periods occurring, it was a torrid battle throughout the duration of the race as Moody and Scott weaved their way around lapped traffic as laps clicked away. At times, Moody had about a fifteen car advantage over Scott, who from time-to-time would reel him back in; however, as Scott was nearing the leader he experienced a mechanical failure and was forced to leave the track while running second. This allowed Moody smooth sailing all the way to the checkered flag as he returned to the Specialty Sportswear Winner’s Circle for the first time this year. Thompson held back a strong-running Lyle for second; behind this pair of drivers were Bodenhamer, Beebe, and Dotson as the race concluded.

It what turned out to be an absolute fantastic event, the dream of co-promoter Reid Millard came to life in a big way in the first-ever ‘Battle of the Badges’ law enforcement race between Missouri Law Enforcement Officers representing various agencies from across the state. There were participants from St. Joseph to Springfield and from Kansas City to St. Louis and many points in between as 21 badge wearers competed in Crown Victoria police interceptor vehicles specially prepared, painted, and fully decked out with role cages and safety equipment in an event that raised money for Missouri Special Olympics. The event atmosphere harkened back to the good ‘ole days when the “stock cars” of the track brought in many, many fans in the stands, the crowd got into the racing by standing on their feet cheering on their favorite driver, and featured a ton of action on the speedway to keep everyone guessing who would come away with the victory. With 21 cars on hand, it took three heat races to sort out the line-up for the 20-lap main event.

Officer Richard Bradley, Captain Mike Jones, and Sgt. Steve Weaver came away victorious with heat-race wins during preliminary race action. Weaver also took home the trophy for most money raised, while the lone female competitor, Capt. Zim Schwartze, representing the Columbia PD came away with best in show and best looking driver. Senior Deputy Officer Jason Conn took home the hard charger award while the Jefferson County team took home the longest distance traveler award. Everyone waited with baited breath as the entire field made their way to the green flag and into turn one. Like a bunch of seasoned pros, the drivers all got through the turns in check and settled into a perfect race rhythm with door-panel-to-door-panel action all the way back through the field. The first half of the race was caution free with exciting racing until the caution flew halfway through the event. Up front, the fans saw an exciting race with Weaver, Mike Jones, Steve Doogs, and Sherriff Joey Kyle all battled hard for the ‘top cop’ award. After a few cautions late in the event things really heated up as Weaver and Kyle’s battle resumed in a furious run to the front with paint trading and bumper tagging while the drivers tried to hold onto their positions. In the end, with the fans on their feet and four competitors nose-to-tail for the win, it was Sgt. Weaver came away with the victory over Jones, Doogs, Kyle, Kyle McIntyre, and Richard Bradley.

Time has come for the ‘Historic Half Mile’ that is Missouri State Fair Speedway in Sedalia, Missouri to roar back to life once again for another action-packed night of high speed dirt track racing. This Friday night, August 6 marks the return of the Subway Late Models and W-K Chevrolet Modifieds to the track and in what is sure to be one of the most talked about events of the year, local law enforcement personnel will be on hand for the first-ever ‘Battle of the Badges’ race.

Previous feature winners in the late models on the half mile this year include Adrian’s David Turner and Archie’s Matt Johnson. With travelling series racing elsewhere this weekend, the door is wide open for drivers in the Greater Kansas City area and beyond to come away with a big-money victory Friday night and add their name to the stellar list of previous late model winners at the speedway. Others expected to contend include Larry Clawson, Chris Smyser, Bryon Allison, Randy McGraw, Shorty Acker, and Dave Meyer. ULMA drivers will have the opportunity to earn ULMA association points this weekend and the race will serve as one more shot at tuning up their machines in preparation for the ULMA fair week race later in the month. Brett Wood and Jon Binning are ULMA drivers expected to run strong this weekend in preparation for the fair race. Additional drivers that have raced at the speedway this year include Alan Vaughn, Dustin Walker, Bob Cummings, Zach Goulden, and Will Vaught. The late models will race for $2,000 to win this weekend and $150 just to start the main event!

In the W-K Chevrolet Modified division all eyes will be on Dustin Boney of Kansas City, MO to see if he shows up to try and continue his dominance of a-mod racing this season. Boney has already been to victory lane at the speedway, including his most recent win in front of a packed grandstand just a few weeks ago. Although Boney will surely be in contention for the win if he makes the haul, there are plenty of additional stand-out drivers up for the challenge including the surprise of the year, Austin Siebert, who has been the most consistent modified runner at the half mile this season. Jason Thompson is another man to watch in the modifieds as is James McMillin, Shad Badder, Rick Beebe, and Aaron Poe. Co-promoter Jason Bodenhamer recently took over wheelman duties for an a-modified team and he will also be gunning for the win this weekend. So far this year, Mark Dotson, Curt Potter, Jimmy Dowell, Buddy Thompson, Rick and Sonny Kimberling, Dave Meyer, Danny Crane, Howard Hall, Daulton Greven, and Kevin Blackburn have also ran strong in the modified ranks. The modifieds race for $1,000 to win and $100 to start the main event this weekend.

There are no entry fees or registration fees for any competing car this weekend at the speedway. Note: mention of driver name in press release does not guarantee driver appearance in any competing division. Pit Gates will open at 3 p.m. with a special test & tune session for “Coppers” only beginning at 6 p.m. General admission gates open at 5 p.m. with hot laps at 7 and racing getting underway at 7:30.
